美國平面設計協會（AIGA）從1924年開始舉辦「50佳圖書 | 50佳封面（50 Books | 50 Covers）」比賽，旨在評選出過去一年里在書籍和封面設計上表現最出色的書，并永久錄入可訪問的AIGA平面設計收藏檔案庫中。目前該賽事已成為美國平面設計界歷史最悠久的比賽之一。
2019年度競賽的評委們對每件作品的綜合設計方式進行了評估，包括概念、創新，以及排版、插圖和信息設計等視視覺元素方面的運用，并于5月19日于AIGA官網公布了2019年度「50 Books | 50 Covers」的獲獎作品。本屆大獎共收到783個來自32個國家的作品，最終82件書籍及封面作品脫穎而出，其中有18件作品同時獲評最佳圖書和最佳封面。

競賽主席Michael Bierut認為，好的書籍設計為可持續發展社會建立了好的榜樣，鼓勵人們以充滿激情的方式與世界建立聯系。通過這次評選，AIGA旗下設計媒體網站Eye on Design的編輯Liz Stinson為2019年度的最佳圖書封面設計歸納總結出了4大特點與趨勢：鐳射燙印、以花果等自然景物為元素、豎向排版和采用霓虹色。
